Microsoft Teams Calling: FAQs
Call Functions
Q. How do I call a phone not associated with a specific teammate (e.g. Pulpit, Conference Room, Guard Shack)?
- There are two options for these types of calls:
-
Option 1: Dial the 10-digit phone number associated with that line (i.e. 252 356 3900).
-
Option 2: Click here for instructions on how to import the Misc. phone directory into your contacts list.
Q. Will my phone line work with Teams calling?
- Teams Voice users will be able to use phone numbers they have to make and receive calls whether they are on-site, working remotely or on the go.
Q. How do I listen to my voicemails?
- From the calls screen in Teams, click the Voicemail button in the top right-hand corner of the History pane. Select the voicemail you would like to hear or read. Click here to watch a video on how to make and review your calls and voicemails.
Q. Can I Transfer calls or put them on hold?
- Yes. While on a call, simply select the hold or transfer button at the top of the window. When transferring, you also have the option to consult with the recipient before transferring the call. Click here to see how easy it is.
Q. How do you start a call from a chat in Teams
- You can make one-on-one or group calls with anyone in your organization directly from a chat without having to host a team meeting. These calls are private and won't appear in any team conversation. Entries for the calls will appear in your chat, though.
- Go to your chat list and click New Chat to start a new conversation.
- Type the name or names into the To field at the top of your new chat.
- Select Video call or Audio call to start a call.
Q. Is it possible to transfer calls from my computer to my phone and vice versa?
- Yes. When on a call using your computer, simply open the Teams app on your phone. A banner will appear at the top prompting you to transfer the call to that device. The process works the same for transferring calls from your phone to your computer.
Q. If someone calls me, how do I answer the call?
- All calls will be managed through the “Calls button” in Microsoft Teams. You will receive a notification that you are being called through your Teams app and can choose to accept, deny, or forward the call.
Q. Will I still get my voicemails in my e-mail?
- Yes. A full transcription of the voicemail will be sent to your inbox along with a .mp3 recording.
Q. Can I call people outside of NSHC?
- Yes. All external calls can be made by dialing the 10-digit phone number to include the area code (i.e. 252 356 3900).
Q. Do I need to add a "1" in front of the number when dialing?
-
If you are dialing long-distance, e.g. Apex in Va. Beach, then you would need to add a "1" in front of the 10-digit number. (i.e. 1 757 678 8666)
Q. Can I still make international calls with Microsoft Teams?
- Yes. If you were able to make international calls before, you will still be able to.
Q. Can I have my phone only ring from my computer and not my cell phone?
- Yes. From the mobile device, select your picture in the top left, then "Notifications." Under "Notify me on mobile for" select Custom. From here, you can toggle off Calls, which will push all calls to your computer only, while not losing the ability to transfer the call from your computer to your mobile device.
Phones and Devices
Q. Will I be able to keep my desk phone?
- No. Once your number is migrated to Microsoft Teams, your old Cisco desk phone will not be operational and will no longer have a dial tone.
Q. What are my headset options?
- There are several audio options for Teams calls and we want every teammate to have the opportunity to select the option that works best for them. Click here to see the options and submit your preference.
Q. Are pulpit phones being replaced?
- No, don't worry. We're not going to be replacing phones in:
- Common areas like hallways or lobbies
- Pulpits
- Electrical or mechanical rooms
- Conference rooms
- Shared workspaces (i.e. Lab Lead)
- Any area where it would pose a safety concern
